History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back SCIENTOMETRIC ANALYSES OF CANDIDATES NOMINATIONS FOR NOBEL PRIZES. 1. NOMINEES AND NOMINATORS FOR THE NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY (1901–1910) V.M. Silivanets Scientometric analysis of the procedure for nominating candidates for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1901–1910 in comparison with the nomination in physics and physiology or medicine conducted based on declassified documents of the Nobel Committee in Chemistry in Stockholm. It is shown that for the first 10 years representatives of 13 countries were nominated: Germany – 20 persons; France – 10 persons; UK – 6 persons; USA – 4 persons; Sweden – 3 persons; Italy – 2 persons; Norway – 2 persons; Switzerland – 2 persons; Austria – 1 person; Russia – 1 person; Denmark – 1 person; Netherlands – 1 person; Belgium – 1 person. Total nominated were 54 persons 305 times (on average, more than five nominations per scientist). The Nobel Prize in Chemistry received 10 scientists from four European countries only: Germany – 6, Great Britain – 2, Sweden – 1, France – 1. The reasons for not awarding prizes to D.I. Mendeleev and other Russian chemists were discussed. 269 nominators for the first decade have been established; it is shown detail who was nominated by each of the 10 winners of the first 10 years of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It was proved in the first decade that the most reliable nominators were the Nobel Prize Winners in Chemistry: 60 % of the scientists nominated by them were awarded the Nobel Prizes in Physics or Chemistry. Such a result will not happen again in the future according to the data of the Nobel Committee in Chemistry until 1968.
