History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back BIOGRAPHY RECONSTRUCTION OF V.M. DESYATNIKOV (PERIOD OF 1934-1953) A.R. Narskiy All-Russian (previously – All-Union) research Institute of aviation materials (VIAM), established in 1932 as part of the Main Department of the aviation industry of the People's Commissariat of heavy industry of the USSR – is the largest enterprise of aviation materials science, which has the status of the State scientific center of the Russian Federation. The history of VIAM is the formation and development of aviation materials science in our country – a complex scientific discipline that studies the composition, structure, properties and behavior of aviation materials. One of the little-studied issues in the history of the Institute is the biographies of its first leaders. They play a leading role in the organization and establishment of scientific and technical activities of VIAM in the 1930s, and, consequently, in the development of aviation materials science in our country. The third article in the series of articles about the head of VIAM – party leader Vasily Matveevich Desyatnikov (1883–1953) considers the final period of his life from 1934 to 1953. For five years V.M. Desyatnikov headed VIAM, which was one of the most important stages in his life. Therefore, the main emphasis in the article is made on the achievements of this research Institute under his administrative leadership. Since 1938 Vasily Matveevich worked as a non-standard arbitrator of the People’s Commissariat of the defense industry of the USSR; in 1939 he was appointed a full-time arbitrator. V.M. Desyatnikov died May 19, 1953, in Moscow at the age of 69 years. Materials about the life and work of Vasily Matveevich Desyatnikov are used in the work of the Vasilsursky branch of the Vorotynsky district Museum of local lore (Nizhny Novgorod region). The article is prepared on the basis of archival documents of the Russian State Archive of the economy, the Russian State Archive of sociopolitical history, the State Archive of the Russian Federation.
