AGRICULTURE IN THE CONTEXT OF NUCLEAR CONFLICT |

The article presents the history and main results of research conducted at RIRAE to assess the consequences of a potential nuclear conflicts and provision of the sustainability of the agro-industrial complex in such conditions. RIRAE was the lead institution on the development and improvement of tools and methods for protecting agricultural plants and animals from the damaging effects of nuclear weapons. The studies included an assessment of the levels and extent of radioactive contamination of agricultural land in the USSR; studying the effects of the damaging factors of a nuclear explosion on agricultural plants and animals; development of diagnostic methods for radiation injury; improving the system of measures to increase the stability of the agro-industrial complex to the damaging factors of nuclear weapons. The impact of global climate change in the event of a global nuclear conflict and its impact on agriculture, the effects of global chemical pollution due to the destruction of large industrial enterprises, including chemical facilities, and massive fires were also considered. Estimates were made not only for the population and agribusiness of the Soviet Union, but also for many other countries.
