History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back MATHEMATICIANS OF THE PETERSBURG SIDE. PART I G.I. Sinkevich The article is about the Silver Age mathematicians who lived on the Petersburg side. The first part of the article tells about the history of the Petersburg side, the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary life of scientists, about the main points of attraction of the Petersburg side: higher educational institutions, the houses of Alexei Nikolaevich Krylov, Vladimir Andreevich Steklov, Nikolai Maksimovich Günther and Paul Ehrenfest. Steklov activity contributed to the emergence of the Leningrad school of mathematical physics. Ehrenfest's home seminars highlighted the area of mutual interest of mathematicians and physicists. The fate of the Leningrad Physics and Mathematics Society was dramatic. The Women's Pedagogical and the Third Pedagogical Institutes became the basis of the Pedagogical Institute, later the Russian State Pedagogical University named after A.I. Herzen.
