LITTLE-KNOWN WORKS OF MATHEMATICIAN, MECHANIC GABRIEL LAME (1795–1870) RELATED TO RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION |
M.M. Voronina
G. Lame is known for his works in the field of mathematical physics, the theory of elasticity, mechanics, which glorified his name. It turns out Lame was still engaged in railway construction, and he began to do this in Russia, in which he worked for 11 years. A business trip in 1830 to the grand opening of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway showed him the possibilities and prospects of a new mode of transport. His handwritten report of the trip was a kind of program of action for the construction of such roads. After returning to his homeland in 1831, Lame, for some time, continued to deal with the problems associated with the use and construction of railways. He, together with B. Clapeyron, made a presentation on railways, wrote a number of articles about a new mode of transport, proposed a scheme for the French railway network, and took part in the construction of the Paris-Saint-Germain railway.
