EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL STUDY OF ELECTRIC DISCHARGE: HISTORICAL ASPECT |
A.F. Smyk
The article deals with the derivation and solution of the differential equation of damped electric oscillations, first described in the article by W. Thomson’s "On Transient Electric Currents" (1853). In this conclusion, implicitly (Thomson does not distinguish it), there is an expression of the frequency of charge oscillations on the capacitor plates under the condition of the ideality of the circuit R→0, which much later became known as the Thomson formula. The genesis of this theoretical work of Thomson and its historical significance are discussed, as well as experimental observations of an electric discharge made by the German physicist B.V. Feddersen.
Keywords: W. Thomson, oscillatory circuit, electric discharge, Thomson’s formula, electromagnetic waves.
