History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back SCIENTIFIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTH OF EUROPEAN RUSSIA IN THE LATE 19th CENTURY AND EARLY 20th CENTURY IN THE DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE OF ACADEMICIAN F.N. CHERNYSHEV T.P. Filippova The article studies the documentary heritage of the biggest Russian geologist, academician F.N. Chernyshev (1856–1914). The author describes his multifaceted scientific, expeditionary and organizational activity to aimed at developing the poorly known territories of the North of European Russia in the late 19th century and early 20th century on the basis of a thematic and chronological analysis of archival sources and published works of the scientist. As a result of the study, it was determined that the scientifi c heritage of the scientist is located in different archives of the country. The results of research and expeditions conducted by F.N. Chernyshev are presented in his reports, diaries, letters, manuscripts of scientifi c papers, etc. The identifi ed sources demonstrate not only the tasks and aspects of the scientist’s work in the study of the North, but also, they show his contribution to the formation and development of geological research of this territory.
