History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back NEW ABOUT ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF YAKUTIA I INTEGRATED EXPEDITION OF THE USSR ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN 1925–1930 E.P. Antonov, V.N. Antonova The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that the development of the Yakut ethnography had a deep imperial context. It was established that, along with the study of «Productive Forces», the priority task of the first complex expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences was also the study of the «ethnic forces» of Yakutia. The tasks and results of the research work of the ethnographic detachment on the study of the material and spiritual culture of the peoples of the republic, including such rare types of knowledge as the Yakut ways of counting time and determining distances, are examined. It is shown that all the collected collections were «equipped» with a rich collection of drawings, paintings and photographs, which testified to the successful artistic development of the region. The novelty of the work lies in the fact that the development of researchers served as the basis for the formation and development of the indigenous peoples of the Yakut Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Particular attention is paid to the fact that the ethnographic detachment has become a "forge" of training future cadres of the scientific intelligentsia of the region from among the indigenous people. It is presented that the repression of the late 1920s. steel and the adoption of the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) «On the Yakut case» of August 9, 1928 became one of the political reasons for curtailing in the 1930s. plans for ethnographic and generally humanitarian research of the region.
