The article is devoted to Marshal of the signal forces Andrei Ivanovich Belov, Chief of Communications of the Armed Forces of the USSR, an outstanding organizer of military communications. One of the directions of his multifaceted activity devoted to the development of radio relay communication, a new kind of communication, is considered. The article describes the main stages of the military commander's activity in terms of the development of radio relay communication. His front-line experience in the deployment of radio relay lines has been studied, and his research work has been reviewed at the Military Academy of Communications, aimed at developing the theoretical and practical foundations of radio relay communication. The role of A.I. Belov in the improvement of military and civilian communications in the Turkestan military District using the capabilities of radio relay communication, new approaches in the construction of wireless communication systems is shown. The organizational role of the military commander in the development of the communication system of the Strategic Missile Forces was noted. A.I. Belov was able to systematically deploy work on the large-scale development of the system. Programs for the development of military communications systems based on the latest achievements of science and technology have been adopted at the government level. The activity of the military commander in linking research organizations, scientifi c and technical committees, military educational institutions of the Ministry of Defense and enterprises of the military-industrial complex into a single system was noted. The issues of A.I. Belov's coordination of the activities of military management bodies of the types and branches of the Armed Forces, scientifi c and production teams of various departmental affi liations aimed at developing radio relay communications equipment, taking into account the experience of their operation in the military. The results of this work were noted, which made it possible to develop communication facilities and complexes, including radio relay facilities, strategic, operational and tactical control units, which ensured stable command of troops. Based on the results of A.I. Belov's activities, historical lessons in the fi eld of radio relay communication were prepared.
