History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back The History of the Creation of Typesetting Machines and Manuals for Working on Them, Published at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century Kuzmina N.G. The article discusses the history of the invention of the typesetting machine. The fi rst attempts to create automatic typesetting equipment and the design of basic typesetting machines are described. Most widespread at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. received the inventions of Skudder-Monolin, Mergenthaler – Linotype and Rogers and Bright – Typograph. In some printing houses in St. Petersburg – Leningrad, these machines worked until the midtwentieth century. The article describes manuals for working on typesetting machines by such authors as I.
