History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Exploration of the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago by the Geological Committee of Russia (1882–1929) Filippova T.P. The article focuses on the role of the Geological Committee in the scientifi c study of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The history of the organization and key results of expeditions organized to Novaya Zemlya by the efforts of the Geological Committee under the leadership of geologists F.N. Chernyshev and B.K. Likharev are examined on the basis of an extensive range of archival sources and published works of scientists. The activities of the committee are analyzed as part of the work of the Novozemelskaya subcommittee at the Polar Commission of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1922–1923, which was engaged in the development of the fi rst scientifi c program for the study of Novaya Zemlya. It was concluded that the scientifi c results obtained by the scientists of the Geological Committee had a high importance for the development of the Arctic borders of the country.
