An Attempt to Introduce Electric Lighting in Russia in 1849 |
Petrushchenkov V.A.
2024 marks the 175th anniversary of the attempt to introduce electric lighting in Russia. The French chemist Archereau was invited to the
country by the Russian government to demonstrate the advantages of electric street lighting with an arc lamp regulator of his design powered
by a galvanic battery. Experimental lighting of Nevsky Prospekt, Gorokhovaya Street, Admiralteyskaya and Palace Squares was carried out
from the lower gallery of the Admiralteysky spire. The experiments were conducted under the supervision of a special commission, which
included representatives of various ministries and departments. Based on the results of the tests, the commission concluded that the expected
goals had not been achieved. The article provides organizational and technical details of all stages of this event based on archival materials
and publications of that time.
