M.O. Wolf Publishing Company. On the 200th Anniversary of His Birth |

The founder of the most famous Russian publishing and bookselling company at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Mavriky Osipovich Wolf (Polish
name Bolesław Maurycy) (1825–1883) was a Russian-Polish publisher and bookseller who became, according to his contemporaries, “the fi rst Russian book
millionaire” [1]. M. Wolf studied in Danzig and then in Paris. He spoke several European languages fl uently, knew European and Russian literature quite well,
and was seriously interested in history. Soon after completing his studies in Western Europe, he returned to Warsaw. His interest in the book business, which had
attracted M. Wolf since his early youth, prevailed, and as a very young man he decided to move to Russia and organize his own publishing house.
