History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Activities of Scientists from the Komi branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences on the Project for Transferring the flow of Northern Rivers to the Volga basin Yurova S.V. The article analyzes the role of scientists of the Komi branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the expert examination and development of a project for transferring the flow of the northern rivers Pechora and Vychegda to the Volga basin in the 1940–1980s. Based on the analysis of documents from the Scientific Archive of the Federal Research Centre Komi Science Centre of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Archive of the Komi Republic, as well as published sources, the chronology and subject matter of the scientifi c activities of researchers of the Komi branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences on this problem are reconstructed. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the standpoint of scientists: from initial support for the idea of the transfer due to the importance of the project for the economy of the Komi Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to the justification of the negative consequences on nature and the national economy of the region and the development of their own transfer schemes. The activities of scientists contributed to the scientific understanding of the project and the development of research in the field of nature protection and environmental management.
