History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back The Study of Sectoral Science in Russia: Main Directions and Underexplored Aspects Valek N.A. The article presents a review of Russian studies on the country’s sectoral (applied, departmental) science. Four key research directions are identifi ed: (1) historical and science studies works, (2) studies of economics and management, (3) works on information and communication infrastructure, and (4) scientometric studies. It is shown that, despite the considerable body of accumulated knowledge, there is a methodological gap between the historical institutional explanation of the isolation of sectoral science (departmental subordination, priority of internal reporting, orientation toward applied tasks) and the scientometric diagnosis of its consequences (low visibility of results at both national and global levels). None of these approaches, however, has considered sectoral science as a communication system. The necessity of synthesizing historical methods and scientometrics for developing strategies to overcome communication autarky is substantiated.
