Slips, Envelopes and Notes on Margins: Formula for Success of the British Scientists Thomas Pennant (1726–1798) and Joseph Banks (1738–1820)
Shipitsyna Yu.S.

The article is devoted to the case of scientific communication between the two outstanding British naturalists Thomas Pennant (1726–1798)
and Joseph Banks (1738–1820). The author pays attention to as the character of this communication, that may be named as cooperation, as
the ways with that one was maintained. Among these ways there were not only corresponding, meeting and public reporting, but also different
paper technologies from editing and publication new natural history sources to making notes on margins of authoritative books, classifying
spices by envelopes and using paper slips to add new information and to navigate through the array of information.
Pennant and Banks, two very different persons with unlike strategies of making their own scientific reputation, they managed to gain a
common approach to their routine research practices. Each of them learned from the other and embraced new experiences for gain success.
Eventually the cooperation of Pennant and Banks led to the natural history success itself. Thus, the contemplation of this case may throw light
on unobvious ways of knowledge’ social circulating and academic breakthrough production. The author relies on the correspondence between
Pennant and Banks, their manuscripts and collection’ descriptions, published by Averill Lysaght and Edwin D. Rose.
Keywords: scientific communication, scientific cooperation, paper technologies, Thomas Pennant, Joseph Banks.
