History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back The work of the USSR Ministry of Health's All-Union Institute of Scientific Medical Information in Monitoring Foreign Medical Science Okuneva M.O. The article examines the activities of the All-Union Institute of Scientific Medical Information of the USSR Ministry of Health in studying the achievements of foreign medicine and the scientific potential of other countries. Based on the analysis of research documentation materials from the Russian State Archive of Scientific and Technical Documentation, the main directions, organization, and results of this activity are identified. The All-Union Institute of Scientific Medical Information focused on studying the scientific potential of foreign countries, primarily developed capitalist nations. The greatest interest was in the medical achievements of the USA. Additionally, the scientific potential and medical advancements of the United Kingdom, West Germany, France, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, and other countries were studied. As a result of systematic work by research groups, based on extensive studied material with a predominance of published foreign sources, informational materials were created both on specific areas of medicine and pharmacy, as well as on the organization of research in foreign countries. Scientifi c reports on the outcomes of these works contained detailed conclusions about the level of foreign scientifi c research, as well as literature lists, inventories, and tables of major foreign scientific centers, leading scientists, and research directors, along with visual materials (maps and diagrams). A crucial part of the research work of the All-Union Institute of Scientific Medical Information was the formulation of substantive recommendations for Soviet healthcare authorities based on the analysis of foreign experience in organizing and conducting scientific research.
