History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Designing and the Initial Stage of Construction of the Great Siberian Way in Reign of Emperor Alexander III V.N. Testov The progressive ideas of constructing the continuous railway line from the Urals to the Pacific Ocean, that appeared soon after the opening of the first Russian railways, had been remaining just speculative wishes for almost half a century. The real opportunity of theirembodiment appeared only in 1887,when, at last there had been accepted the principal governmental decision of constructing the Tran Siberian Main line. The comprehensive analysis of the first and the most difficult stage of such a grand erection, the initiator of which was the emperor himself, testifies to the enormous striving of the government of Alexander III for the realization of the great and necessary business.
