Tembotova, E.P. Kononenko The basic stages in foundation and development of the academical Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories, Kabardino-Balkarian Scientific Centre, RAS are represented. The biographical credentials of A.K. Tembotov, the corresponding member of Russian Academy of Sciences, Laureate of International A.P. Karpinskiy Prize on ecology are given. A.K. Tembotov was the initiator and first director of the Institute of Ecology of Mountain Territories and built up, under severe conditions in the nineties of the XX century, the present-day material resources for the research institute; he maintained and developed his scientific school, and put into effect the idea to integrate academic science, education and nature conservation departments. The basic research trends, scientific achievements and results of the scientific and organizational activity in the institute are included.
