History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back Employmentof Combinatorial Concepts and Notions in Mathematical Investigations of XVIII Century Malykh A.E. Yankovich E.I. Historical process of accumulation and formation enumeration methods, receiving of primary theoretical results was described. Scientific contribution in creation of combinatorial theory by some scientists of medieval Western Europe (P. Herigonè, Chr. Clavius, M. Mersenne), and mathematicians of XVII century (P. Fermat, B. Pascal, G.W. Leibniz, J.I. Bernoulli) also were indicated. Mane directions of investigations were concerned to receiption independent and recurrent formulas for calculation of six kinds combinatorial aggregations (arrangements, permutations, combinations, both with repetition and inrepetition of their elements). Combinations with certain limitations on positions their elements also investigated. Euler’s investigation played a leading role in progress of combinatorial analysis. Euler considered new types of combinatorial problems and introduced new combinatorial notion and methods. He solved some of the questions connected with partition numerorum, introduced in analysis the method of generating functions, solved numerous problems for calculation of permutations with restrictions on positions their elements; broadly applied method injection and exclusion. He created a combinatorial theory of latin squares, paid many attention the methods of construction magic squares; solved numerous problems of motion figures on chess-board; stood in sources graph theory. Euler took part, directly or indirectly in solving and development of the most classical combinatorial problems.
