History of Science and Engineering Annotation << Back HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS IN RUSSIA: TRANSLATIONS AND INTERPRETERS (XVIII–EARLY XX CENTURIES) N.V. Lokot This article is devoted to questions of formation of history of mathematics in Russia as an independent science, the elements of which began to appear in the Petrine era and during its development passed through several stages. The paper identifi es fi ve stages of Russian scientists design elements of historical-mathematical research in the science with its subject, goals and methods. The purpose of the article is to analyze the first of them is the stage of historical and scientifi c translations. The work analyzes, in chronological order, two types of translations (translations of mathematical works of the ancient Greeks and the translation of historical-mathematical works of Western European scholars), briefl y describes the personalities of the translators, little known in the historical and mathematical literature.
