Borisov Studies on the study of vegetable and vegetable-feed crop rotation, soil cultivation, irrigation, the use of fertilizers, as well as on weed control and storage of vegetable products from the first days were included in the research program of the Scientifi c and Research Institute of Plant Protection from the fi rst days of its foundation in 1930 (since 1992 – VNIIO). The scientifi c developments of the institute made it possible to identify the best predecessors and introduce vegetable feed and vegetable crop rotation with the inclusion of annual and perennial grasses in vegetable growing, and reduce the clogging of vegetable fields. The study of soil fertility and the effectiveness of mineral and organic fertilizers in multi-field stationary experiments in 6 soil-climatic zones of Russia allowed us to develop an environmentally friendly organo-mineral-biological system of fertilizing vegetable crops, which is also suitable for ecological vegetable growing. The storage laboratory determined the optimal storage conditions for white cabbage, carrots, table beets, onions and other types of vegetables in various storages, including with artificial cooling. The standards for the loss of vegetable products for various crops and varieties of late-ripening vegetables during long-term storage were developed, the implementation dates for new varieties and hybrids were determined, and the trends in the quality and disease resistance of vegetables during long-term winter storage were studied. Industry standards and norms have been developed for 60 types of vegetable products. Keywords: vegetable growing, crop rotation, fertilizer, variety, quality, storage, standardization.
